Expectations (and results) Vary

Updated: 4 days ago

There is a lot of variety in the types of homesharing that people engage in. Two of the biggest points that potential housemates must negotiate around are task exchanges and privacy.

Task Exchanges. A task exchange arrangement is one where a seeker agrees to perform certain tasks for the home provider for a lower rent. Generally, the more tasks someone performs for their housemate, the less the rent they would pay.

Privacy. Some people are naturally outgoing and love socializing and sharing spaces. However, home sharing doesn’t need to feel like a college frat house–it’s okay for the home provider to establish boundaries, including private areas. Just be aware that this can sometimes mean the share is less desirable and may command a lower rent.

We will discuss both of these ideas in more detail in a future post, but for now, just know that privacy and task exchanges in homesharing are not all-or-nothing. They exist along different spectra, and you get to choose how you want to live.
